As creators, we’re constantly told that networking is everything, but I’ve watched too many talented people leave conferences with nothing but a few selfies and tote bags. Real, impactful networking isn’t a matter of luck or charisma; it’s a skill you can cultivate with deliberate strategy and preparation.


In this post, I’m breaking down exactly how to become a memorable, sought-after connector in our industry, so you’re not just another face in the crowd, but the CEO everyone remembers.



Prep Before You Go: The Secret Weapon

The truth is, effective networking starts long before you ever step into an event space or conference hotel. I can’t stress enough: if you just show up hoping for serendipity, you’re playing amateur hour. Instead, treat every event like a business mission. Here’s how I do it:


Build Your Hit List: A “hit list” isn’t just for big names. Go to the event website and scout the speaker lists, panelists, sponsors, and companies with booths. Make note of who you want to meet: executives, creators in your niche, rising talent, or people whose work inspires you. Then, write down exactly why you want to connect with each person. This roadmap will shape your entire conference experience, letting you maximize your limited time and energy.


Do Your Research: Before making any approach, know who you’re talking to and what you want to discuss. Check out their recent social media, collaborations, and panels. What are they promoting? The number one killer of networking? Leading with an ask. Let’s flip the script:

  1. Open with a Sincere Compliment: Recognize something specific they said or did. For example: “I saw your panel on creator marketing and loved what you shared about consistency.”

  2. Connect on Shared Context: “We’re both working in similar niches” or “This is my first event, and I knew I had to meet you.”

  3. Make It About Them: “What project are you most excited about right now?” People love talking about themselves and passion projects, and it makes you instantly memorable.


Who Should You Network With? The Networking Triangle

Divide your targets into three groups:

  • Dream List: Top execs, brand reps, and industry idols, make yourself memorable.

  • Peer List: Creators at your level, these are your future collaborators and accountability buddies.

  • Rising List: Up-and-comers; remember, kindness builds loyalty, and today’s new face could be tomorrow’s superstar.

Connecting with all three levels gives you full-spectrum visibility and potential.


Tools and Tactics for a Lasting Impression

Use the Photo Hack: Ask for a quick photo right after your introduction. Then, send it on Telegram, Instagram, or Twitter within 24 hours with a warm note. It’s a visual anchor and a reminder of where and how you met.

Follow Up Like a Pro: Always reach out within 24 hours: “Great meeting you, here’s our photo!” Then, follow up seven days later, reference something from your interaction to show you care.

Be Unforgettable: Bring unique business cards or digital tap cards. Dress to express your brand. Connect people whenever possible; being a connector keeps you top-of-mind.
